vSlice vs. VPS vs. Physical

MD's vSlice solution has several advantages over other shared or dedicated hosting platforms. The table below explains this in more detail.

Availability: MD vSlices are highly available, clustered and redundant solutions. As described below, vSlices are fully protected against server hardware failure. Network traffic is fed by 3 diverse bandwidth providers and served across a 100% Cisco network, featuring dual routers and dual clustered firewalls. Each server node has diverse paths across diverse switches to premium network storage. Where possible all single points of failure have been eliminated to provide superior uptime.

Performance: vSlices are a high performance solution served across several Intel latest generation Xeon 5500 nodes, each equipped with 48GB of RAM and 16 processor cores. Resources are always guaranteed - if the node is under load then the resource scheduler will intelligently shift your vSlice to a different, less congested node in real time and with no downtime. With normal shared or VPS servers there is nowhere to go - if someone else is consuming all the resources then you are stuck on the same node until the offender can be dealt with, or until the server destabilises and needs to be rebooted.

Reliability: With vSlice you can rest assured that your data is safe. vSlices are stored on several enterprise storage area network (SAN) devices. Each SAN has 16 high performance SAS drives in RAID50; if a drive fails there are two hot spares available per SAN at all times to rapidly rebuild the set in real time and with negligible performance impact. The SAN intelligently monitors the health of all drives and will proactively deal with a failing drive. Compare this against the standard dedicated server or VPS, where just one hard drive failure can cause days of downtime, and even dataloss if the provider restores from an old backup.

Rapid Hardware upgrade: Using vSlice technology we can take your server offline and effortlessly add extra RAM, CPU and disk space in minutes. Traditional dedicated servers may require hours of downtime, if indeed they are new enough that parts are still available. With vSlice you can scale your requirements up and down as required with no lead time or costly hardware capital expenditure programs. As technology changes, your slice can be easily migrated to next generation servers.

Flexiblity: You can run a wide variety of Linux and Windows O/S (either 32 or 64 bit) on your vSlice. vSlices can also be cloned in minutes to create a perfect copy for dev and testing purposes, or as a failback option as part of your change management process. Compare this to cloning a standard dedicated server - a highly specialised and resource intensive task that takes hours and expert knowledge to perform.

Recover from hardware failure: Traditional shared, dedicated and VPS servers are difficult to recover after a hardware fault - especially if a hard drive fails. vSlice is not tied down to any specific server and can be moved around in real time to spare nodes in the cluster. If a node does fail then your vSlice is auto-evacuated and rebooted onto a working node in the cluster, slashing your downtime to almost zero.
